          MAY: MOTHER'S DAY

A little boy forgot his lines in a Sunday school presentation. His mother was in the front row to prompt him. She gestured and formed the words silently with her lips, but it did not help. Her son’s memory was blank. Finally, she leaned forward and whispered the cue, "I am the light of the world." The child beamed and with great feeling and a loud clear voice said, "My mother is the light of the world."

There are, indeed, thousands of mothers who do light up the world with their Christ-like living.  Of course, in the true biblical sense, only Christ can accurately claim that divine title “Light of the world.”  But every person that imitates Christ, reflects His divine light into a very dark world.  Somehow, it seems there are more mothers than anyone else, who naturally reflect Christ’s life.  Then again, maybe I’m just a bit prejudiced around this time of year as we approach Mother’s Day.

I am confident that many others join me in my prejudice.  While not everyone enjoyed the blessing of a happy and satisfying relationship with their mother, an overwhelming percentage of people can reflect back on at least some pleasant and enjoyable memories with their mother.  Most children love their mothers.  And Mother’s Day is a great time to express your love and appreciation for mom.  Of course, the big decision every year is what to get mom for Mother’s Day?!

Perhaps we should take some ideas from little children.  Here are some Mother’s Day ideas from children:

Angie, 8 years old, wrote: "Dear Mother, I’m going to make dinner for you on Mother’s Day. It’s going to be a surprise. P.S. I hope you like pizza & popcorn."

Robert wrote: "I got you a turtle for Mother’s Day. I hope you like the turtle better than the snake I got you last year."

Eileen wrote: "Dear Mother, I wish Mother’s Day wasn’t always on Sunday. It would be better if it were on Monday so we wouldn’t have to go to school."

Little Diane wrote: "I hope you like the flowers I got you for Mother’s Day. I picked them myself when Mr. Smith wasn’t looking."

And how about this one from Carol? "Dear Mother, Here are two aspirins. Have a happy Mother’s Day!"

Now, perhaps none of these ideas caught your fancy.  What is the perfect gift for a mother?  I wish I had the answer, but I’m still trying to figure that one out myself.  I do have a clue, though.  I think the best gift is the one which communicates your love in a thoughtful way.  It isn’t necessarily the value of the gift itself that counts, but the value of your effort and care in getting the gift for her which means the most.  Your love is the most valuable gift and that love will shine through whatever gift you give, whether it is flowers, dinner out, or a simple card.  In that act of giving, you are reflecting back her heart’s love for you which has been a daily expression throughout your life.  And this kind of love is a reflection of Christ’s love for the world.  So go ahead, light up the world with Christ-like love on Mothers Day!  Let the world know that good mothers, like Christ, are the light of the world!

                                                                NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER

Thursday May 1st the church was open from 7:00 AM until 7:00 PM, twelve hours.  The theme for the day this year was Prayer:  America ’s Strength and Shield.  Indeed, our country is under attack, but not just from flesh and blood enemies who hate us and want to destroy us.  There is the battle against people’s souls being waged by principalities… the powers of the darkness of this world… spiritual wickedness in high places.

Forty-three people answered the call to prayer and came to the church during the day.  Several others joined us at home or on the road.  The prayer day guides were distributed to the house bound members of the church so they could join us also.  We linked our prayers as individuals and Berea Baptist Church with thousands of others who sought God to have mercy upon our nation in these troubled times.

What will be the outcome?  I cannot tell you what it will be.  This I know however:  The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth   The Scriptures relate God’s favorable response to His children’s prayer pleas to spare them and those associated with them.  God delights to answer the prayers of those who trust in Him.  Time, perhaps eternity, will reveal the impact of the intercession made on May 1, for our nation.

Thanks for being obedient to the Lord’s directive that we pray For kings, and for all that are in authority.   Thanks also to John Feliciano for opening up and making coffee and providing donuts for the early pray-ers.
